Today I went to work my day in the morning shift. I woke up at 3:20am, got ready and headed out the door. I worked this shift with a bit more stamina then I’ve been feeling lately which made me feel prepared for the plans I had after work.
10 am hit and I was starting to feel zonked. Perhaps I would cancel my plans and just go home and get some much needed sleep. I’m so tired of feeling tired!
But I made a commitment, and I really wanted to invest some time in the people I was hanging out with so i finally caved, did what I needed to do to get out of work on time and then headed over to my sweet friend’s home to meet up and take off to our final destination.
Our friends, Jamie-Lee and Josiah, participate in hosting Refugee’s who come in from overseas. They’ve been helping with this for over a year. Today some relatives of the family they worked with came in. We got to their new apartment ahead of them with supplies and food. It was a long haul! But it was so great. We unpacked new pots and pans, plates and glasses, bowls and cleaning supplies. Then the family finally arrived! They didn’t speak a lick of English, looked extremely exhausted and so happy to finally be at their final destination.
The grandfather came into the kitchen where we were finishing up washing some dishes, and showed his daughter, the mother two two teens, how to use everything. He turned off and on the gas stove, wondered at the dish washer, found all the pots and pans and explained them all to her and showed her the hot and cold water which she loved.
These people generally come from living in camps or some type of displacement until they can get awarded the chance to come to their final destination.
And just like that they headed out to spend the night with some cousins who picked them up from the airport and come back to move in later.
It was a fantastic experience and reminded me so much about the point of ministry. I have to admit, unpacking all the items that were donated reminded me of so many of the missionary houses we lived in, things people gave to us in all our travels and how invaluable they are to the survival people who travel long distances.
Anyways, I just thought I’d share. Everyone should do service at some point, and I think sometimes it’s even better when you are so tired and already feel like it’s an imposition. Then you realize how much you have and how blessed you are even when you’re exhausted.
