Do you know what AABIW@S stands for? Here is a hint:
AABIW@S is an acronym for Automatically Awesome Because I Work @ Starbucks.
Which is what I do, so I’m Automatically Awesome right? Isn’t that what the social status is? Well even if it isn’t I’m super stoked about working there! I just completed my 2nd day and am still in love with it. That’s a good sign right?
Well Monday was the first day of my life with Starbucks! To say that it was long, tiring, exciting, fast and overwhelming are all understatements! I can tell that this is a new phase of my life, a new level of my professional career and a new way of relating to people and a culture I have yet to fully grasp. I worked a 9-4:30 shift.
My store is the 2nd largest volume store in the district and it’s definitely busy all the time. Because our training material wasn’t in yet they put as on the bar making drinks within the first couple hours. So we got some great hands on training. I started with another new worker who just recently graduated from Wheaton College and is a Jesus-loving dude so I’m pretty excited about that! I think that in time, we’ll be relying on each other in the midst of the atmosphere.
So I’m coming in as an ASM, or Assistant Manager in Training. The plan is that I do Barista training and certification in the first 3 weeks and then move on to managerial training. I’ll be learning the in’s and out’s of how Starbucks works and I can already tell that I’m going to be proud of working with this company. So my shift ended at 4:30 pm right? Well here’s the thing.
There was a leadership meeting at 5pm which was pretty darn close to the store so I didn’t go home. It was at the previous ASM’s house (she’s quitting to do a different job which stinks because she seems super cool!). This house was magnificent! It’s in an old baptist church completely redone but still with a very authentic antique feel. I wish I could describe it all but lets just break it down to: 4 living rooms, 4 bedrooms with bathrooms in each, 2 separate bathrooms, 2 kitchens, and a steeple nook. Not to mention all the original artwork and Frank Lloyd Wright pieces. It was intense.
So anyways, I was brought into the drama that has happened in the store and I feel like I have a better grasp on what is expected of me as a leader. I think that my career with this company will grow and I planning on taking you on this fantastic journey with me!
So now I have increased my social status:
Now I work at Starbucks and own a Mac and soon an Iphone and we’re getting a sweet place in the city in the next week or two…more on that little snippet later!

Nathaniel says:
Congrats Lys! But do you have a sweet Starbucks Gold Card? See, nothing says status to me more than a Gold Card.
Lys says:
well I’m cool by association b/c Naphtali has his gold card
But luckily I don’t have to pay it anymore! This job is going to actually save us a lot of money…haha!
